Project

Every day, both in the Emilia-Romagna Region and globally, building demolition and renovation generate a significant amount of waste and scrap, known as CDW (Construction and Demolition Waste), causing a significant impact on the environment. At the same time, the building sector has a growing need for secondary raw materials to be incorporated into construction products in order to develop sustainable and efficient solutions, in compliance with increasingly stringent European and national regulations.

REWINDS is dedicated to the development of sustainable, high-performance building materials created using scraps, by-products and demolition waste. These materials can be of different types and sizes, from aggregates, mortars and conglomerates, through bricks and ceramics to insulators and polymers. Many companies in the construction supply chains are actively involved in the project, facilitating the experimentation, demonstration and validation of the innovative solutions devised, with the aim of promoting their widespread adoption in the market.

Specific objectives

REWINDS introduces a circular model that has the potential to substantially enhance the performance building sector in terms of sustainability and efficiency. The reuse and recycling of demolition waste within innovative, low-impact materials not only reduces the amount of materials disposed of in landfills and the extraction of natural resources, but also significantly decreases primary energy consumption and CO2 emissions associated with the entire construction process, from production and transportation to maintenance and disposal.

The specific objectives of REWINDS are:
  • Re-definition of low-impact products: to develop and refine low-impact buildings products by adapting formulations and processes, enabling the reuse of a high percentage of CDW.
  • Development of innovative formulations and technologies: to create innovative and sustainable formulations and technologies based on CDW to be used for building constructions by 3D printing.
  • Laboratory testing of innovative materials: to demonstrate, test and validate the effectiveness of innovative materials incorporating CDW in a laboratory setting. This includes assessing performance durability, compatibility with existing structures/materials, healthiness and emission reduction.
  • Sustainability and CO2 emissions reduction assessment: to quantify and demonstrate the sustainability of the developed solutions and their impact on reducing CO2 emissions, using standard and shared methodologies such as Life Cycle Analysis (LCA).
  • Pilot building testing: to demonstrate and validate the applicability, functionality, yield and performance of the developed products in real environments, through installation of them on pilot building.
  • Regional technological advancement: to promote the technological advancement in the regional supply chain by involving 9 partner companies from different areas. These companies will have the opportunity to integrate the project’s results into their production processes, fostering regional growth and innovation.
  • Role of
    Certimac

    Materials science and technology are key areas of expertise on which Certimac has constantly focused its activities. The REWINDS project offers the opportunity to consolidate and further strengthen industrial research activities in this field through the formulation, characterization and validation of sustainable construction products. This includes the development and optimization of waste-derived materials and innovative mix designs, as well as the quantification of emissions and their impact on human health. Once the conformity of the products to the main international standards has been verified, these solutions will be subjected to specific tests both on a prototype scale and on pilot buildings.

    Furthermore, as project leader, Certimac is responsible for the coordination and dissemination of the project.

    Expected outcomes

    The expected outcomes of REWINDS are as follows:
  • to develop and disseminate innovative technologies for CDW recycling to be implemented in new construction and building renovation projects;
  • to foster the construction industry's transition to the use of energy and environmentally sustainable materials. This results in a reduction in carbon emissions, an increase of circularity within the construction sector, and a more efficient utilization of natural resources;
  • to promote the transition to green buildings with high energy efficiency and low environmental impact. This supports global decarbonization and enhances parameters related to air quality, health, and overall well-being.
  • Research partners
