Project

The Italian building heritage existing up to 1900 is essentially made up of masonry buildings that use mainly traditional materials. Efficiency, Performance and Durability of these materials and the entire building heritage depend on the ability to carry out targeted interventions to slow down the degradation and natural aging, intrinsic in every material.

In this context the project "MImeSIS - Smart Sensorized and Sustainable Materials for the Historical Building" is implemented. The Project is co-financed by the Regional Operational Programme of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF ROP 2014-2020) and by the Development and Cohesion Fund of Emilia-Romagna Region.

Goals

MImeSIS aims to improve the performance of the existing building heritage through the use of eco-sustainable smart technologies, which involve the integration of traditional materials and sensors.
In particular, the project has 3 specific goals:
  • the development of sensor-based materials capable of continuously monitoring specific predictive parameters of the deterioration in progress in the masonry;
  • the redefinition of products commonly used in construction in order to prepare them for the integration of specific sensors;
  • the experimental validation - both in the laboratory and in situ - of the functionality, efficacy and durability of these smart systems.
  • Role of
    Certimac

    Certimac is the leader of the project and takes care of coordination and dissemination activities. Together with CNR, CIRI-EC, Centro Ceramico, Geosmart.Lab - and in collaboration with some industrial partners - it follows all the phases of the project in order to develop and validate prototypes of smart technologies, which involve the integration of traditional materials and sensors, able to identify the phenomena of degradation in place in the walls, and thus allow the occupants to intervene promptly, avoiding major damage and improving indoor comfort and energy efficiency.

    Certimac deals specifically with durability tests and the validation of sensor systems (both in the laboratory and in situ) by developing and implementing a specific test protocol for this new type of materials.

    Expected
    results

  • Development of sensor solutions and the related measurement chain, one for each type of material tested (plasters, mortars, bricks, adhesives, reinforcements)
  • Creation of prototypes of sensorized masonry
  • Development of an experimental validation protocol for smart systems
  • Creation of guidelines on the installation and maintenance of sensor solutions
  • Preparation of a demonstration laboratory (both virtual and real) as an acceleration tool for the technological transfer of the developed solutions.
  • Research partners

    Industrial partners

    Funding

    The Project has been admitted to financing for a maximum contribution of 798,359.72 euros on a recognized investment of 1,180,929.95 euros.
