Life Cycle Assessment

Certimac supports manufacturers in the life cycle assessment (LCA) of their products and processes

FIND OUT HOW WE WORK
What is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and why is it important?
The energy audit report is the detailed technical document that is issued following the performance of the energy audit by our certified Energy Management Experts and energy auditors.

As is known, the Mandatory Energy Audit is required by the most recent and rigorous European and national regulations to different types of subjects:
The benefits of LCA for companies
The benefits of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for a company are many:
  • Life cycle optimization: LCA analysis allows companies to identify the stages of the product life cycle with the greatest environmental impact. This information allows improvement efforts to be focused where they are most needed, thus reducing the overall impact on the environment;
  • Strategic decisions support: LCA studies provide critical data to organizations. This information supports the planning of sustainability-oriented business strategies and government policies, guiding informed and responsible decisions;
  • Certification and eco-labeling: LCA analysis can be used to certify a product's environmental performance, facilitating the awarding of eco-labels. These labels guide consumers toward more sustainable products, encouraging companies to continuously improve their practices and adopt more eco-friendly solutions;
  • Integrated Sustainability: the multifaceted approach of LCA not only provides quantitative information on environmental pressure, human health and resource consumption, but also enables the transparent identification, quantification and monitoring of improvement targets. Together with the assessment of social (Social LCA - SLCA) and economic (Life Cycle Costing - LCC) aspects, this methodology contributes to the overall picture of corporate sustainability;
  • Alignment with European standards and requirements: LCA analysis helps companies measure their positioning and alignment with criteria required by European legislation, associated DNSH principles, and specific calls for tender.
  • Using Life Cycle Assessment as a tool for decision-making and continuous improvement is a crucial step toward a more sustainable and responsible  corporate future. Find out how Certimac specialists can guide you along the path to sustainability.
    Our services to evaluate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
    Certimac's Sustainability Division specialists comprehensively support companies wishing to reduce the environmental impact of their products or processes. Through a multidisciplinary approach, they combine engineering knowledge, feasibility analysis, cost assessments, to the detailed life cycle assessment (LCA) study of products and processes. They accompany manufacturers through each step of the process, starting from defining the objectives and scope, guiding them in collecting the necessary data, to an in-depth analysis of the results.

    At the end of the process, a detailed technical report summarizing all stages of the LCA study developed is provided to the manufacturer. In this way, it will be possible for manufacturers to make informed decisions based on sound scientific data and work synergistically with the team to develop products and processes with reduced environmental impact without sacrificing high performance.

    The 4 Stages of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA)

      This step establishes the study objectives, functional unit, reference flow and system boundaries within which the analysis will be conducted. This step is essential to ensure that the study is focused and consistent.
      This is where all inputs and outputs of the system under study are collected and quantified. This includes materials, energy, emissions and waste at each stage of the product life cycle.
      At this stage, direct and indirect environmental impacts resulting from life cycle activities are assessed. These impacts may relate to climate change, acidification, natural resource use, among others. The LCIA helps to understand the extent of impacts and identify critical areas that require action to improve sustainability.
      This last stage involves the interpretation of the results obtained in the previous stages. Specialists analyze the information to understand the environmental implications of the data collected and define possible corrective actions. This process guides business decisions, helping to reduce the environmental impact of the products and services offered.

    How we work

    Certimac's path to sustainability

    Certimac's specialists support manufacturers and organizations in their path to environmental sustainability, conducting analysis of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of the products or organization using the Carbon footprint methodology, from the analysis of the initial situation to the identification of necessary interventions, including through the support of financing green innovation.

    Discover the 5 points of our method:
    We conduct a detailed initial analysis of the potential environmental impact of the product or production process. During this phase, we work closely with companies to fully understand the specific needs and details of their products.
    Next, our team focuses on accurate data collection. This step requires ongoing collaboration with companies to capture detailed information about their product life cycle, including materials, manufacturing processes, transportation, and waste and end-of-life management.
    Using advanced methodologies, we conduct an in-depth analysis of the collected data. This analysis allows us to assess the environmental impact of the product or service at each stage of its life cycle.
    Once the analysis is completed, we present a detailed evaluation of the results. We are available to explain every aspect of the LCA analysis report, helping companies understand the environmental impact of their product and identify possible opportunities for improvement, including through access to calls and funding for green innovation.
    We conclude the process by providing a complete and accurate LCA report. If requested, we can assist in the process of obtaining environmental labels and other environmental impact analyses such as: Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) or Carbon Footprint.

    Why choose us

    With criteria of absolute independence, impartiality and technical expertise, Certimac - a Research Body founded and participated by ENEA and CNR - operates with its Sustainability Division and its professionals specialized in the analysis of the environmental and energy impact of products, processes and services, use the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methodology along with other tools such as EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) and Carbon Footprint. These advanced methods are not only essential for businesses and public administrations, but also represent a fundamental added value in environmental management.

    Our goal is to apply the results of scientific research in the eco-efficient management and design of products and processes. We identify and evaluate critical environmental issues, promoting technological and sustainable innovation in processes and materials. From initial assessment to implementation of eco-design solutions, we are committed to guiding manufacturers, including offering support in seeking funding for green innovation.

    Through our multidisciplinary expertise and joint work with the Energy Division and Materials Division, we integrate aspects of environmental impact and engineering, ensuring that products are safe, high-performance, and environmentally sustainable throughout their life cycle.
