Project

The INCITE project addresses the need of stakeholders involved in urban transformation and regeneration for advanced decision-making tools to facilitate large-scale regeneration processes

These tools, based on aggregated data, will enable the modeling and representation of multi-scale scenarios, useful for risk analysis, cost-benefit assessment, and the definition of intervention priorities.
To achieve this goal, INCITE will focus on developing more efficient protocols for rapid geometric-spatial data acquisition.

Additionally, the project will address the modeling of specific information, such as risk management, fragility analysis of communities and territories, regeneration of existing building stock and public spaces, as well as the analysis of high-value-added services like sustainable mobility.

Through the representation and visualization of multi-scale scenarios, INCITE aims to provide a comprehensive and detailed overview of different intervention options, facilitating the decision-making process and contributing to the creation of more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive cities.

With a duration of 24 months and co-funding from the Emilia-Romagna Region under the ERDF RP 2021-2027 program, INCITE aims to define an integrated open-standard digital platform for the predictive maintenance management of existing built heritage.

The project builds upon validated research results obtained through projects like MImeSIS and e-BIM, where Certimac served as Lead Partner and Project Partner, respectively. However, INCITE goes beyond these results by conducting tests in various local areas and on a pilot case representative of complex urban interventions.

INCITE implements the TRL of the "InSPiRE - Integrated technologies for Smart buildings and PRedictive maintenance" project, originally developed for building-scale interventions, on consolidated urban fabrics. It does so by identifying specific buildings, areas, and conditions for targeted interventions.
InSPiRE addresses challenges related to implementing BIM-based collaborative digital environments integrated with key technologies for Big Data management and modeling.

The current challenge for City Information Modeling protocols is the transition from extensive intervention areas and scenario representations to developing tools that link geometric-spatial and performance descriptors with the service needs of target communities.

INCITE Specific Objectives

INCITE aims to improve application and data management protocols for existing building stock, focusing on innovative solutions in the following areas:
  • Data Collection: Utilizing advanced technologies such as SLAM and photogrammetry, satellite radar methods, etc., to acquire geometric and morphological data rapidly and efficiently. This data is fundamental for monitoring building structures and infrastructure, mapping ground deformations, and characterizing the urban fabric, including elements like green areas, materials, and system coatings.
  • Data Utilization: Using informational data for specific, useful, and practical purposes, such as assessing structural safety, preventing seismic risks, evaluating building energy efficiency, analyzing the connective urban fabric, and developing innovative services.
  • Interoperability: Ensuring that tools guarantee an efficient flow of information between different digital environments (BIM, GIS, IFC, CityGML, etc.).
  • Role of
    Certimac

Certimac distinguishes itself with expertise in the following sectors: characterization of building material properties, evaluation of building energy performance, use of data for planning future interventions based on a consolidated database containing the performance of typical built heritage materials, evaluation of the impact of monitoring activities on sentinel buildings through the integration of smart materials, and experience gained within the MIMESIS project and extended in the INCITE project to the urban context.

Certimac is able to provide comprehensive support throughout all project phases.

    Expected outcomes

The expected results of INCITE are as follows:
  • Transfer detailed information of various types to the urban scale following a City Information Modeling approach.
  • Implement integrated BIM and GIS functionalities to extend previously developed potentials to the urban scale, completing the intermediate level of detail, LOD B-C (related topics include: survey protocols, satellite technologies, photogrammetry, SLAM, etc.), and enabling the system to aggregate both spatial data and data describing the needs of the community.
  • Integrate various information sources (spatial, satellite, sensor data, etc.), modeling, and visualization of data and information through three-dimensional priority/risk maps available to experts and technicians (professionals and Public Administrations) and citizens.
