Project

CAMPRES is a 30-month research and innovation project co-funded by the Emilia-Romagna Region through resources from the ERDF RP 2021-2027 program.

CAMPRES focuses on developing innovative composite materials – Polymer Matrix Composites (PMCs) – for containing lithium batteries. These are intended for automotive and energy storage applications, suitable for any installation scenario.

The materials developed within the project must meet specific requirements to ensure a good level of protection in case of external incidents, such as fires, or battery thermal runaway. Therefore, it will be crucial to develop fire-resistant composites capable of enabling more efficient installation.

Furthermore, mass production allows for the manufacturing of these containers at reduced costs, streamlining the entire production process. It also promotes the definition of standards that foster the interoperability of elements across different areas of use, in line with circular economy principles and end-of-life, as well as second-life, battery management.

To enhance the fire-resistant properties of PMCs, the following possible solutions will be explored:
- The addition of flame retardant additives within the thermoplastic matrix.
- The addition of next-generation, biomass-derived flame retardant additives, which are more sustainable and less toxic.
- The addition of metallic protective layers to the PMC, to produce a Fibre Metal Laminates (FML)

CAMPRES Specific Objectives

CAMPRES aims to develop a fire-resistant thermoplastic matrix composite solution coupled with aluminum. The use of this solution enables mass production using injection molding techniques, reducing production times and manufacturing costs. Additionally, it would result in a fully recyclable product.

To this end, CAMPRES identifies the following Specific Objectives:
  • Development and characterization of a thermoplastic polymer matrix composite material, with fiber reinforcement (optionally of different natures) and a protective flame-retardant layer.
  • Development of a prototype for a modular element to contain lithium battery cells, which will serve as a demonstrator for performance targets.
  • Modeling of digital libraries for the composite material, compatible with calculation tools and algorithms for customized design.
  • Role of
    Certimac

Thanks to its specialized expertise and know-how in material and system analysis and characterization techniques, as well as test protocol and standardization development.

Certimac will participate in: WP1 "Definition of Requirements and Regulatory Framework based on Application", related to defining the regulatory context for innovative technologies and identifying the necessary requirements for the final manufactured product

Furthermore, Certimac will participate in all other WPs, providing the project consortium with its expertise in characterization and qualification techniques for innovative materials from a physical-mechanical perspective.

    Expected outcomes

    CAMPRES aims to:
  • Ensure the developed material is suitable for injection molding.
  • Develop a prototype that demonstrates the performance targets defined by the application requirements and one-step process manufacturability.
