Project

BRILLIANT is a 30-month research and innovation project co-funded by the Emilia-Romagna Region through resources from the ERDF RP 2021-2027 program.

The BRILLIANT project aims to investigate the moisture resistance and end-of-life treatment of natural fibers in composites. It will explore potential ecological hydrophobic treatments that are fluorine-free.

BRILLIANT will focus on developing composites based on natural fibers and hybrid resins as an enabling technology for the development, production, and use of sustainable micro and nanomaterials.

Additionally, BRILLIANT aims for the structural lightening of materials, particularly metallic, polymeric, composite, and ceramic materials. This is intended for application in the automotive and broader transport sectors, without excluding potential applications in other fields, to achieve weight reduction of certain components by replacing metal parts.

Through its research and development activities and the introduction of advanced technologies, BRILLIANT promotes the competitiveness of the green product sector based on innovative and sustainable processes and materials, according to circular economy principles.

Specific objectives

BRILLIANT aims to:
  • Compare the costs and performance of various bio-based reinforcing fibers (WP1) and ensure the necessary supply quantities for the automotive sector.
  • Derive fundamental mechanical data, essential for component production, from the association of resins with fibers (WP2), and develop test specimens. These will be tested and their characteristics (e.g., resistance in adverse environmental conditions, aging) will be verified (WP3).
  • Develop a pilot to investigate the association processes, surface modification, and production of composite components (WP4).
  • Role of
    Certimac

Certimac will be responsible for the qualification and mechanical and thermophysical characterization of components, as well as conducting accelerated aging tests on the material.

It will support ENEA in the development of materials and technologies functional to the pilot.

    Expected outcomes

BRILLIANT aims to demonstrate the technology in an industrial environment (TRL6) and the economic sustainability of the production process (TRL7)
